Please...No More Pets

Flipsy

2008-2008

Well, the "awful, awful" as Ronald Reagan so eloquently put it (referring to his assassination attempt) occurred Sunday. There were no shots fired across our grassy knoll; no chivalry on parade by an army of Secret Service agents. Just the sounds of a child mourning the loss of a pet that he had already adopted into his family- and which he loved dearly.

Flipsy the Cat had not yet turned four months old. A reluctant gift received from a family member, Flipsy became just another statistic in a list of former pets of Zach's. Saying We have a misfortune with pets is like saying Congress has a misfortune with approval ratings!

As I left for prayer meeting I saw Flipsy at the corner of the house, looking curiously out toward the front yard. Unfortunately, he didn't stay in the front yard. Our neighbors' 120-pound Golden retriever made a "chew toy" out of Flipsy.

Through the tears of us all and the questions from Zach asking "why" this had to happen to his pet, the only thing I could tell him in the process of comforting him at the time was- the truth.

Because we live in a fallen world and since no one or no thing is exempt from the results of the fall of man-sometimes bad things happen to good people- or kittens. Death is Part of Life. Sometimes when Zach questions me about a subject or life issue, I just tell him, "It's just P.O.L.(Part Of Life) Zach!"

Now, I'm not sure how much of our conversation he understood or wanted to at the time Sunday, I am sure of a couple of things.

Life is brief (James 4:14). Like a vapor.....

Death is certain (Hebrews 9:27). Check out these stats. 1 out of 1 people die. If you haven't already, Please make preparations to meet your Creator before "checking out" .......

Oh, the third thing I am sure of ? Curiosity killed the cat!!
