Uh! The dog days of summer are in full swing! And although you may not be able to notice it, the days are getting shorter. It is during this time of year when the heat is so oppressive, that I began to yearn for the refreshing days of autumn.
Two years ago in the month of September, I was awakened and prompted to write the following, what I call "responsive writing" .
Men, I hope you are emboldened by this as much as I was ......
The Greatest Pursuit
As we rapidly approach autumn, we cannot help but to notice some changes taking place around us. The days have begun to get shorter, the mornings have a certain crispness to them and even the short walk out to you vehicle allows you the opportunity to hear squirrels cutting acorns and jumping from limb to limb. Let’s face it- HUNTING SEASON IS ALMOST HERE!! That time of the year that most of us guys can hardly wait for is upon us. Living in Arkansas, we are blessed beyond measure to be able to “pick” which type of game we want to pursue and “get after it”, so to speak.
The other day as I was driving home, a thought occurred to me. What if we pursued a deeper, closer walk with Jesus with as much diligence as we pursued the whitetail deer? What would occur in our spiritual life, if the men of Calvary used just half the time we spend in our pursuit of Arkansas wildlife every year and instead, sought out God’s will- His good, and acceptable, perfect will (Rom. 12:2)? What if, when we go to renew our hunting license, we decide also “to be transformed by the renewing of our minds” (Rom. 12:2)? What if, when we go out to sight-in our hunting rifles, we decide as the apostle Paul, to “press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:14)? What if, the men of Calvary, prepared our hearts to receive God’s Word on Sundays, as well as we prepare our deer stands to receive US during deer season? What if, instead of clothing ourselves in the latest gadgetry and camo , we decided to clothe ourselves “in the whole armor of God , that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Eph. 6:11)? What if, Men of Calvary, we “cleared a path to God” as well as we clear shooting paths around our deer stand? If we removed the clutter in our lives, could we see HIM better?
